KS1 Phonics and Reading
Early Literacy Skills at St Andrew’s
In Reception class the children are taught daily phonics following the DFE’s Letters and Sounds guidance. This is a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills to children, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven. There are six overlapping phases.
When the children reach an appropriate stage in their reading skills they are introduced to Collins Big Cat books which is the main scheme in school. Big Cat books are supplemented with many other books and sources of reading. From the start the children are encouraged to read a broad range of materials including fiction, well-loved classics, traditional tales, poetry, plays and a broad range of non-fiction topics from sport to science.
Children’s spelling skills are taught through phonics based activities. At the appropriate time the children are provided with between three and twelve words to learn at home and they are tested on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
